How to Maintain your Motorcycle Helmet

Helmet maintenance is very important hygiene for a motorcycle rider to guarantee that your helmet cover remains in top condition so that your head will be secured and kept safe. Here are some tips and steps in taking good care for your best motorcycle helmet.

Tips to maintain your helmet:
  1. Don’t balance your motorcycle helmet on the mirror of your bike; there's one place it will always end up on the floor. So put it there. Don’t hang your helmet on your bike's mirror because it can damage the lining and could render your helmet as good as useless.
  2. Clean your helmet least once a year and do clean it properly. Don’t rush in cleaning and just take your time. Most helmets these days have a removable lining feature so you can take this out and wash it properly.

Cleaning your helmet:
  1. First, start cleaning inside of your helmet, you’re going to be faced with two options – removable liner and non-removable liner. The removable liner is by far the easier to work with because you can pull out all of the liner including the cheek pads.
  2. You can now wash the liners using your hands using a mild cleaner. You can use detergent or soap. Once you have washed them give them a good rinse of water and hang them out to dry in the air.
  3. When your helmet is dry, use a clean cloth to wipe gently your helmet to make it shine.

In the road also has so many kinds of motorcycles, from the cutest one to the baddest looking one, these also implies in speaking of helmets that includes with has greatest protection to the lowest one. So let's begin with these types. I have listed below the known and masked as official motorcycle helmet types that has been approved legally by DOT (Department of Transportation).

1. The Full-Face

These is commonly wear and suited on sports motorcycles. This is known as the most safest of all types, it provides great protection because it covers your entire head. It has a face shield that protects the rider's face from wind and allows clear vision. There were also a study about the distribution of an impact damage about the Full-Face Helmet that proves that having the highest protection compare to other type. These is a good choice for long way travel, and high speeding.

2. The Off-Road

Also called as "Motocross" Helmet, these is commonly used on motocross sports, motorcycle stunts, extreme sports, dirt bike and trail bike. It has a elongated chin, visor portions for protection from sun light and flying debris and a chin bar. Some design has a sun-shield and some is open-face to allow riders to wear goggles. This is commonly built with a lightweight and stronger materials to be suited and fit on the extreme stunts.

3. The Modular

Also known as "Flip-up". Commonly seen in urban street area. Known also suited with Scooters and Sports Bikes. These helmet is the next choice to be the safest. It is a hybrid and a combination of Full-Face and Open-Face helmet. You can convert it into an open-face by flipping up the chin of the helmet and also convert it into full-face by closing or flipping down the chin.

4. The Open face

This is commonly used in urban streets area. Suited with scooters, and big bikes. Also called as "3/4 Helmet" because it covers 75% of the entire head. It covers the ears, cheeks, and back of the head, but lacks the lower chin bar. Riders use goggles on wearing this helmet for eyes protection from dust and wind. These is the second to the last on speaking for safety because it doesn't have a face cover to protect your face.

5. The Half-Helmet

This is suited for scooters and big bikes and it is popular with rockers and road racers. Wearing this make you a bad-ass or fearsome looking. In the USA it's called "Shorty" and on UK called it “Pudding Basin”. It has the similarity with open face helmet but it doesn't have a lowered rear, your head will coverup into 50%-60%. It provides minimum percentage of safety but most of riders wear it because it is convenient and easy to use compare to other type.

What is the best type?

Motorcycling is very dangerous and we must be ready of what negative will happen to us, so wearing a protective gear such as helmet will reduces the risk of getting injuries. People choose of what would be they like to be suited on their bike, some may choose with the highest percentage of safety, some with the fashion, some with the good looks, some with the popularity and some may choose with an ease of use.  It is really hard to choose which is the best of all, because each of them has unique features to represent.

Wearing Motorcycle Helmet

Safety is the main function of a motorcycle helmet, but some people are buying it for the purpose of getting attention from others because of its own style and design. If you are a type of person who's into fashion state, you have the freewill to choose any color and modern design that entices the eyes of your friends whenever they see you coming towards them. But some people don't care if the helmet looks great on them or not because they know the potential danger they can get when taking off on the road without wearing a helmet.

Taking a ride in a motorcycle may lead to a serious accident depending on the impact that can cause head injuries, and most of these cases are due to neglect of wearing a helmet. Putting on helmets is not a thing for some riders out there because they do not feel at ease with how it looks like when it covers all over your head. And yes, you might feel that way for the first time but when you get used to it, you will surely realize how a single helmet protects your head, offers security and saves your life. Also, a helmet is like your partner in crime. It gets every bite of large insects along the road, shields you from falling debris and absorbs the smoke and dust when a vehicle bursts out on you. Below is an example on how the helmet gets the pain, instead of letting you have it:

Picture below denotes the damages taken by your helmet, which reduces your risk of obtaining a serious head injury or even death. For more details please visit Info-graphic of Motorcycle Helmet.
